Erick Rowsell has chosen to end his season ahead of the Tour of Britain following a season-long battle with illness and injury.
Rowsell’s decision comes after taking advice from leading doctors, with total rest the only solution.
I have been struggling all year with illness and injuries and inevitably they have had a big effect on my training and racing.
With the support of Madison Genesis, some of the best sports physicians and my very best efforts I have worked hard to return to full health, however this has just not happened.
Together with Madison Genesis I have made the difficult decision to end my season now and concentrate on recovery, ready for 2018.
It is extremely frustrating to miss this year’s Tour of Britain, as it is a huge target for myself and the team.
Since taking a mid-season rest I have aimed to get myself back to full health and fitness for the race but unfortunately I haven’t been able to do so and I must now put my health first.
I am already looking forward to returning to racing next year and being at the sharp end of bike racing once again.
Madison Genesis have backed Rowsell’s decision, with team manager Mike Northey supporting his recovery throughout the year.
Erick has had some great rides with Madison Genesis over the last three years, but perhaps what has stood out most is his ability to do this when returning from illness and injury.
Erick’s ability to continue to compete at the top level despite some serious knocks have shown his true talent and determination.
This is why everyone on the team is fully supporting Erick on his recovery and return to racing at full strength in 2018 with Madison Genesis.
