When Connor Swift first jumped on a new Genesis prototype, little did he know he would ride it to victory two hours later at the Leicester GP.
Although there are no details about this bike, we got a little exclusive from Connor about how the secret project came about.
A couple of weeks ago I was told I would be given the opportunity to test out a prototype Genesis bike.
Two weeks later all was revealed at the Leicester GP when, the day before the race, I was shown the new frame.
It looked great, so I made the easy decision to race it. I’m not too fussy about my bikes and I knew our mechanic Chuck would do a great job building it to my measurements.
I woke up on race day to see the bike perfectly built with the latest Dura Ace and PRO finishing kit – it was mega.
I was quite excited at the prospect of testing and racing a totally new bike that hadn't been ridden by anyone else.
Having such an opportunity, matched with the best equipment is one of the great things about Madison Genesis and something I deeply appreciate.
When I first got on the bike the main difference was that I was lower on the front end, which I preferred straight away as it felt natural and more aero. After having a quick warm-up it felt great straight away. Everything you want from a bike was there; stiff, responsive, aero, racy, comfortable and bloody good looking!
Those characteristics are because the geometry compared to the current Genesis Zero is slightly more aggressive, with a shorter top tube and head tube and more material in various areas to make the bike stiffer.
Another new feature is the specification of direct mount brakes. These provide extra braking power which can be critical in races when you’re coming in hot to corners and need to scrub off some speed.
Whilst racing I had full confidence in the bike; it was great when cornering and accelerating, but going and winning on a brand new prototype Genesis clearly shows it wasn’t lacking in any areas!
It now stands as a pretty lucky bike for me and I am very happy to continue racing it for the rest of the season that’s for sure.
