2017 British national road championships and series dates confirmed First races of 2017 season confirmed for Madison Genesis

Madison Genesis are pleased to announce their first 2017 race dates, as British Cycling confirm the 2017 national championships alongside the spring cup, grand prix and national circuit series’.

Starting the season is the four-round HSBC UK Spring Cup Series, with three weekends of back to back road racing from April 2, before the final round on 14 May.

Famed for a range of lumpy and grippy courses, complemented by unpredictable weather conditions, the series begins in Yorkshire with the East Cleveland Klondike Grand Prix on April 2, followed by the Tour of the Wolds and the Chorley GP.

The series culminates with the Lincoln GP on the storied Michaelgate cobbled climb. Won by Madison Genesis’ Tom Stewart in 2016, the team will go in as defending champions of the famous Roy Alan Hart Memorial Shield.

The grand prix series follows the spring cup, with a further four races that begin with the Tour of the Reservoir.

Moving from its traditional early-season slot, which became a byword for freezing temperatures, riders could expect a very different race, without the howling wind and snow showers that have defined the contest in recent years.

Erick Rowsell’s record includes race victory in Northumberland at the 2015 edition and a stage win in 2016.

The Stockton GP returns after a year hiatus, having hosted the British Championships last year, before a return to Ryedale on 6 August.

The race holds agonising memories for Matt Holmes, who was caught on the final straight to the finish line, after making a late bid for glory.

Concluding one week later with the Leicester Castle Classic on 13 August, the HSBC UK Grand Prix Series will produce four highly contested races.

2017 HSBC UK National Road Championships
The Isle of Man will host the 2017 British road championships on the Isle of Man, with the time trial on 22 June and the road race on 25 June.

Last year the rock – as it is affectionately known – hosted the Manx International GP, where three Madison Genesis riders, in the form of Erick Rowsell, Tom Stewart and Matt Holmes finished in the top five.

Both Rowsell – second in 2016 – and Holmes (who finished fourth) will return for the team this year, with high ambitions of securing a result in what has become one of the most selective one-day domestic races.

This character is in no small part due to the race being dominated by World Tour riders in recent years – you’d have to go back to 2009 to find the last domestic rider to podium at the event.

With open moorland across large hillsides typifying the Isle of Man’s topography, there’s certainly scope for this year’s edition to turn into a climbers’ special.
